New Fire Station No.4 Being Planned

The Yuba City Fire Department is working on the relocation of Fire Station No.4 from its current location at 211 S. Walton Avenue to a new site to the west on Ohleyer Road, south of Franklin Road. The existing station was acquired by the Yuba City Fire Department when it assumed the responsibilities of the former Walton Fire Protection District in September 2001. The fire station was originally built in 1964, and subsequently modified in 1991. Growth has negatively impacted station operations and raised concerns of firefighters being able to effectively respond to emergency calls for service. In recent years, single-family homes have been built directly behind and across the street from the station. Additionally, West Walton Elementary School was built adjacent to Andros Karperos Middle School and the added school-related traffic in the morning and afternoon significantly impact the ability of fire equipment to access Walton Avenue and quickly respond to calls. Walton Avenue is also slated to be widened to better handle the increased traffic load. This widening project will take 26-feet off the front of the fire station property.

Based upon this information, the City purchased a 10-acre parcel at the southeast corner of Franklin Road and Ohleyer Road. Approximately 2½-acres will be used to develop a new 10,000 square foot fire station that will replace the existing Walton Avenue station. A future fire training facility is proposed to be built to the north of the new station, as funding comes available. The City has hired Ratcliff Architects of Emeryville to design the new station and develop construction specifications and drawings. The new facility will be located on the east side of Ohleyer Road south of Franklin Road and will house a 3-person staff and appropriate firefighting equipment (i.e., fire engine, grass firefighting truck, and a water tender). The new station will be better situated to respond to calls for emergency service from areas west of Highway 99 south of Colusa Avenue.

The project is in final design phase and is tentatively scheduled to go to bid in early 2008, with construction beginning the latter part of 2008.
